The National Museum in Poznań is one of the largest and oldest museums in Poland. It consists of the richest collection of Polish and European paintings in Greater Poland. Its jewel is the only in Poland painting of Claude Monet - "Beach in Pourville".
The history of the museum dates back to the first half of the 19th century. Its exhibitions contain, among others, items from the collection of the owner of Rogalin, Edward Raczyński. They were donated by then hundred-year-old Raczyński in 1990.The eclectic and representative main building from 1904 of the National Museum displays two painting collections - medieval Polish and from the period between the 16th and 18th centuries. Its jewel is the largest in Poland collection of coffin portraits of nobles. The first floor of the main building presents the collection of European paintings which most important piece of art is "Beach in Pourville" by Monet.The newly added wing of the monumental museum exhibits the collection of Polish art from the 19th and 20th centuries. It consists of the largest in Poland collection of works by Jacek Malczewski. It also presents paintings by such artists as Stanisław Wyspiański, Olga Boznańska, Tadeusz Kantor, or Jerzy Nowosielski.Less
