Town Hall in Opole

Local name: Ratusz w Opolu

The main building of the Opole Market Square is the Town Hall. In its present shape it was built in the second half of the 19th century and in the 1930s. It is a building modeled on the Vechhio Palace in Florence. It has a 65-meter arcaded tower with a conical spire. The wings of the building also refer to the Italian Renaissance.

Although the Opole Town Hall is relatively new, its history dates back to the fourteenth century. Earlier wooden and brick buildings were destroyed by city fires and during numerous wars. In the second half of the nineteenth century, the baroque tower standing on the Market Square was decided to replace a new, neo-Renaissance modeled on Italian palaces. This tower collapsed during subsequent renovation works in 1933, but it was rebuilt in almost unchanged shape.

It is a square, massive building with floors tapering at the top. The building is surrounded by an arcaded loggia. Two wings were added to the tower in the years 1933–1936. They also refer to the Florentine Renaissance and are decorated with arcades. There is a pub in the basement of the town hall, which refers to the traditions of medieval Świdnicki Cellars.
