Opole Market Square

Local name: Rynek w Opolu

The center of Opole retains its medieval urban layout. Its central place is the Market Square. Most of the townhouses surrounding it were destroyed in 1945. There are two medieval tenement houses under numbers 31 and 1. The other, called "Pod Lwem" was rebuilt in the 17th century and today it is decorated with a Baroque façade.

The market in Opole was laid out during the site of the town in the 13th century. Initially, there were wooden houses. Because of repeated fires, they were changed to brick buildings. From the first, medieval buildings survived only two townhouses. The "Pod Lwem" Tenement House, rebuilt in the 17th century in the baroque style, stopped during the escape of King Jan Kazimierz.

The remaining tenements were reconstructed after World War II following the pattern of the turn of the 19th and 20th centuries. They have pastel, classicizing façades. The central part of the market is occupied by the monumental Town Hall, referring to the Florentine Renaissance. On the Market Square there is also the Avenue of Polish Songs and Music Kiosk, where you can listen to the Polish hits played on the stage of the Amphitheater.
