Opole Amphitheatre

Local name: Amfiteatr Tysiąclecia

The amphitheatre is, besides the Piast Tower, the most famous building in Opole. It was made famous mainly by the National Polish Song Festival held there every year. The building with a curved roof standing in the background of the remains of the Opole castle was visited by the most important singers and cabaret artists.

In the place where the Amphitheatre stands today was a settlement in the Middle Ages, which is considered to be the progenitor of Opole. Archaeologists managed to excavate large fragments of wooden structures and objects of everyday use, therefore they postulated the creation of a museum in this place. Ultimately, however, the authorities decided to build the Amphitheatre, which was established in 1963.

Since then, the object has been reconstructed several times. However, the building preserved its original shape designed by Florian Jesionowski. The amphitheatre can now house over 3,600 people. In addition to the National Polish Song Festival, numerous concerts and outdoor events take place there.
