Opole Zoo is located on Bolko Island. Despite its long history, it's one of the most modern zoos in Poland. The majority of the zoo's pavilions and buildings was built in the 21st century. It consists of about 1000 animals belonging to over 200 species. Among them are sea lions and very rare mountain gorillas.
The park with wild animals was established on Bolko Island in 1912. It specialized mainly in bird species until World War II. In the 1930s the zoo was opened for visitors and thanks to many donations the exhibition was enriched in exotic mammal species like pumas and lions. The zoo was damaged during the war but was reactivated. In 1997, however, it suffered very serious damage due to the flood. The reconstruction is still in progress. Buildings and pavilions are built virtually from scratch.Opole zoo consists mainly of bird and mammal species. The exhibits of reptilians and amphibians are much smaller because of the pavilion's fire in 2012. The area also has food courts, mini line park, and playground.Less
