Church of St. Francis of Assisi

Local name: Bazylika św. Franciszka z Asyżu

The Church of St. Francis of Assisi was built after the Franciscan Order was brought to Cracow in the first half of the 13th century. The church was one of the first brick buildings in the city. Despite the numerous fires (some of them were very serious), the church mostly preserved its Gothic shape. The monastery of the Franciscan Order is attached to the church.

The church consists of three chapels built between the 15th and 19th century: Blessed Salomea, Passion and Our Lady of Sorrows. A copy of the Shroud of Turin blessed by John Paul II can be found in the chapel of Passion. Moreover, the presbytery and main nave attract the attention thanks to the wonderful stained glasses designed by Stanisław Wyspiański.

Visiting the church during Christmas allows seeing the traditional living nativity scene which is prepared by the Franciscan Order each year for many years.
