Grodzka Street is one of the oldest streets in Kraków. It is a part of the Royal Road. Grodzka Street connects Wawel with the main square. The known monuments such as the Romanesque church of Saint Andrew, or the early-Baroque church of Saints Paul and Peter are situated on it. Apart from that, numerous restaurants, cafes, and shops are located in the local tenement houses.
A trade route to Hungary was here in the place of Grodzka Street in the early Middle Ages. In the times before the foundation of the city, there was Okół settlement focused around the church of Saint Andrew. Grodzka Street was a representative city road since always. It was used by kings to reach the Wawel Castle from the main square. In the 19th century, part of it burnt. After the fire, the street was expanded, making space for pedestrians.The most important monuments on Grodzka Street are churches of Saint Andrew and Saints of Peter and Paul. They are located close to each other at the intersection of Poselska and Senacka Streets. There are also many 17th-century tenement houses with beautifully decorated facades. Old coats of arms are still visible above two of them - Pod Słoniem and Pod Lwem. The building of Collegium Iuridicum, which in the 15th century was bought by Kraków University, has late-Baroque cloisters. The workshop of Veit Stoss was located in the building no. 39.Less
