The Archaeological Museum of Cracow focuses mostly on the research in the region of Lesser Poland. Apart from the monuments found in the local excavations, it also displays few Egyptian sarcophagi and items dug out in the graves near El-Gamhud. One of the most valuable display units is also the statue of the Zbruch Idol.
The Archaeological Museum of Cracow is the oldest facility of that type in Poland. It was established in 1850. First items were mostly donated by collectors. One of them was the statue of the Zbruch Idol. At the beginning of the 20th century, the museum acquired the Egyptian collections mostly gifted by professor Tadeusz Smoleński who conducted a research in El-Gamhud. The museum presents four sarcophagi, king's crowns, death masks, dishes, and jewelry. The main museum's field of interest is Lesser Poland. The exhibitions dedicated to this area show how inhabitants of Lesser Poland lived and farmed in the prehistoric period. The outdoor exhibition "Garden of Ceramics" is organized in the museum's garden and was prepared by artists from Wrocław.Less
