Copy of Shroud of Turin

Local name: Kopia Całunu Turyńskiego

The Copy of Shroud of Turin is housed by the Church of St. Francis of Assisi. It is one of the few faithful replicas. It was blessed by John Paul II. The replica is placed in the chapel of the Passion. It lies on the main altar, in the glass sarcophagus designed by Anna Zabdyr-Jamróz. The ceremonial unveiling by Cardinal Franciszek Macharski took place on Palm Sunday, 14 April 2003.

The Shroud of Turin itself is a large piece of canvas with the image of a man, believed to be Christ. According to Christian tradition, he was wrapped in it and buried. Apart from the shapes of the body, wounds caused by the crown of thorns, whipping, nails, and a wound in the flank are also visible.

The oldest mentions of the Shroud of Turin come from the biblical Apocrypha from the 1st and 2nd centuries when it was housed in Jerusalem. Later, its owners changed many times. In 1578, it was secretly delivered to Turin in northern Italy where it is located to this day. Since 1694, the Shroud of Turin is placed in the separate chapel designed by Guarino Guarini.
