Bishop Erazm Ciołek Palace - Museum

Local name: Pałac Biskupa Erazma Ciołka - Muzeum

One of the branches of the National Museum in Krakow is currently located in the monumental Bishop Erazm Ciołek Palace. It consists of the two permanent exhibitions: "Art of Old Poland between the 12th and 18th centuries", and "Art of Orthodox Church of Old Rzeczpospolita". The first exhibition presents pieces of medieval and modern art while the second one shows the exceptionally valuable collection of icons.

The palace is equally interesting. The building was constructed at the beginning of the 16th century for Płock's Bishop Erazm Ciołek. He was a diplomat, humanist, patron of art, and also a secretary of King Alexander I Jagiellon. Many features of Italian Renaissance can be recognized here such as a gate with a cartouche or window framings. Worthy of attention is also the late-Gothic collonade placed in the tenement house's vestibule.

The palace also consists of a maintenance workshop of paintings and sculptures, and two science branches: Polish art and sculpture until 1764, and Art of Orthodox Church. The exhibitions serve as a didactic help.
