Located on Lake Ohrid, the city has an ancient pedigree, a picturesque old town and numerous valuable churches, and has been inscribed on the UNESCO list since 1980.

In the place where today is Ohrid stood the ancient cities of Diassarites and Lychnidos lying on the famous Via Egnatia. Already in the 4th century Christianity settled here, and religious monuments from its first centuries belong to the most magnificent in the Balkans.

The city is located on Lake Ohrid and around it there are numerous beaches and bathing areas. It is a region of great touristic importance, and Macedonians treat trips to the lake similarly to trips to the sea to which they do not have access.

The oldest part of Ohrid is a tangle of narrow, cobbled streets and small squares. There are characteristic Balkan houses with the upper storey ahead and a high stone foundation. Between them you can see medieval churches.

The most important of them are the Church of St. Zofia and the Church of St. Panteleimon. The latter was reconstructed according to available sources and excavations. Next to it are secured mosaics from the original temple from the 4th and 5th centuries. Apart from the buildings of the city, in the hamlet of Kaneo stands the most famous church of Ohrid, St. Jan Theologa, beautifully situated on a steep bank of the lake.

Between the city buildings you can also find a Roman theater, which is currently used to organize concerts and outdoor events. The city is dominated by the fortress of Samuela, from which you can enjoy extensive views.
