Elbasan Castle

Local name: Kalaja e Elbasanit

Elbasan Castle is located in the very center of the city. To this day, only fragments of the huge walls remain with the remains of two towers. They surround the densely built-up area of the center. There are, among others, the Royal Mosque, the church of the Mother of God, preserved Ottoman houses and the clock tower.

Elbasan was an important city during the Roman rule. At that time, a garrison was stationed here, and Via Egnatia ran through the city. In the 15th century, the Turks adapted the old Roman and Byzantine walls to create a fortress. It resisted, among others, Skanderbeg's army. The fortress functioned until the 19th century, and then gradually fell into ruin. Within it, many residential houses and shops were built.

Elbasan Castle today is primarily powerful walls. In the past, they were 9 meters high and strengthened by 26 towers. Within the walls you can see the Turkish Clock Tower characteristic of the Balkans. There is also a 15th century Royal Mosque rebuilt at the beginning of the 21st century. In the church rebuilt after the fire in 1833, you can see a nineteenth-century carved iconostasis.
