Center for cats
Local name: De Poezenboot
De Poezenboot in Amsterdam is an unusual animal shelter. It's on board the boat on the Singel Canal. Stray cats live here, there are no cages or playpens in the shelter, animals walk freely on the deck, and tourists visiting the boat can pet them.
Asylum has been operating since 1968, it was founded by Mrs Van Weelde, who has long looked after stray cats, providing them with help and shelter. Initially, the animals lived at her home, but their number continued to increase, eventually there was not enough space for other injured creatures.
The hostel was moved to a boat, the first was called "Tjalk". In 2002, a specially designed "ark" was built, adapted to the needs of animals. A foundation was founded that works to this day. Ms. Van Weelde died in 2005, currently the foundation is managed by her close friend Judith. Volunteers help her.
