The Prisoner's Palace was built in connection with the overcrowding of local prisons to relieve pressure. To connect court rooms with prison cells, the famous Bridge of Sighs was built. The bridge received such a name because prisoners led to court often sighed there over their lost freedom.
Bearing in mind the beauty of the rooms, which windows overlook the Riva degli Schiavoni and San Marco Palace Prisoner, over time the facility was transformed into the center of cultural events. On the first floor of the palace there are several rooms where exhibitions, concerts and events take place. The Palazzo delle Prigioni has been organizing exhibitions during the International Art Exhibitions since 1955 by the Taipei Fine Arts Museum of Taiwan.
The construction of the Palazzo delle Prigioni began in 1563 by Giovanni Antonio Rusconi, and was completed in 1589 by architect Antonio de Ponte.
