Sant'Ambrogio di Torino is a town famous for its Sacra di San Michele abbey, founded in the 10th century. It stands on a hill above the town's buildings and is not only a valuable monument, but also a great viewpoint over the surrounding area.
The town was founded around an abbey founded in the 10th century on Mount Pirchiriano. The buildings of the village grew at its foot, at the bottom of the valley. The main attraction, Sant'Ambrogio di Torino, Sacra di San Michele, is a monumental, Romanesque-Gothic building that looks great against the backdrop of the mountains. Within the monastery, there is the Romanesque Church of San Michele, residential buildings and the partially ruined Torre della bell'Alda. It is from there that you can watch great views, incl. to Turin and the surrounding peaks.
In the village below the monastery, a lot of old buildings have been preserved, including several, mainly baroque churches, remains of city walls with towers, an 11th-century clock tower and former city palaces. Today, it is primarily a base for tourist and pilgrimage movement oriented towards Sacra di San Michele.
