Sansepolcro is a historic town and the birthplace of the famous Renaissance painter Piero della Francesca. The local museum exhibits his most famous work, the Resurrection.
The city has ancient roots, and in its present shape it began to develop in the 9th century. It is surrounded by the remains of defensive walls with four gates. Inside you can see a picturesque tangle of cobbled streets, squares and stone houses.
Around the main square, Sansepolcro, there are mostly stone houses from the turn of the Gothic and Renaissance. Some of them have towers topped with battlement, in many also arcades have survived. Currently, there are restaurants and cafes on the ground floors. In the surrounding streets you can see many pretty tenement houses with flower pots in the windows.
