Basilica of Saint Pudenziana

Local name: Basilica di Santa Pudenziana

Saint Basilica Pudencians (Basilica di Santa Pudenziana) in Rome is the titular church built in the 4th century. It is famous for its 5th-century mosaic, which can be admired in the apse and frescoes by Niccolò Circignani.

The mosaic depicts Jesus, who in his left hand holds an open book with the inscription "Lord gave the land of Puddion" (Dominus Servator Ecclesiae Pudentianae). The background is the New Jerusalem, a city intended for all saved souls that descends from heaven (vision of the Apocalypse of St. John). Jesus is accompanied by the apostles. The mosaic has been preserved in excellent condition, even the Visigoths invaded Rome in the early fifth century.

A characteristic architectural element of the temple is the 13th-century Romanesque tower. The present appearance of the church is due to the renovation of the sixteenth century, the work was carried out at the request of the then Cardinal Enrico Caetani.
