Grosseto is a historic town in an area called Maremma, which boasts a beautiful nature untouched by mass tourism. The city itself has preserved its historic center around the circular Dante Square.
The city is surrounded by the Maremma Regional Park. It covers a large part of the coast with sandy beaches, meadows and low hills with rock outcrops. The whole area is cut by a network of hiking and biking trails, perfect for active tourism.
Grosseto's history begins in Roman times, but no traces of buildings from that period remain. In the Middle Ages, a new center was built on the site of a former Roman settlement, to which the seat of the archdiocese was moved in the 12th century. In Grosseto's history, the years of prosperity alternate with periods of decline, wars and epidemics. However, despite numerous disasters, a nice, historic center has been preserved here.
The most important attractions of Grosseto are concentrated in its center. There is the circular Dante Square with the Aldobrandeschi Palace rising above it. It belonged to the family that ruled Grosseto with interruptions from the 13th to the 14th centuries. In the Old Town there is also the Romanesque cathedral of St. Wawrzynca Quarter and many nice tenement houses from different eras. The collections of monuments related to the history of the city and the surrounding area are available at the Maremma Archaeological Museum.
