Cosenza is a historic town situated in the hills covered with citrus orchards. The medieval castle towering over the buildings is visible from a distance.
The city was founded in Roman times, but it fell into decline after the fall of the empire. It was under the rule of the Byzantines, Arabs, Lombards and Normans. It was not until the 12th century that it revived as an important commercial and agricultural center.
In the center of Cosenza, located on a hill, many medieval monuments have been preserved. The biggest attraction is the ruins of the Norman-Swabian castle. Its origins date back to Arab times, but the enormous walls were built by the Normans, and the fortification was expanded at the behest of Emperor Frederick Barbarossa. Due to its location, the castle is an excellent viewpoint over the surrounding area.
In the old town, you can also see the Romanesque cathedral with the tomb of Isabella of Aragon, as well as numerous historic churches and tenement houses.
