The castle stands on a hill that is one of the highest points in the city. Its beginning dates back to 1132, when Count Roger II of Sicily made it a real Norman stronghold. In 1184, the castle was severely damaged by an earthquake and underwent complete reconstruction in the 13th century. Tourists can admire the restored building, the courtyard, and the statue of Roger II.
