Chiavari is a town on the Ligurian Coast. It has quite narrow, sandy beaches and a nice old town. Since the 19th century, it has been famous for the production of chairs, including in the White House.
The city has ancient roots and in Roman times there was a commercial port here. Its golden age began at the end of the 10th century, when it was placed under the authority of Genoa. It then became a thriving trade center. At the turn of the 18th and 19th centuries, it temporarily belonged to France, until it finally fell within the borders of the united Italian state.
At the beginning of the 19th century, chairs were manufactured in Chiavari. They quickly gained widespread fame, and was used by, among others Napoleon III. Currently, they can be seen in the offices of politicians around the world, including the seat of the US President.
The center of Chiavari has narrow streets called carruggio lined with houses with arcades. Their characteristic feature is that none of the pillars that support them is the same. The arcades now house restaurants and shops with handicrafts and local products.
As a city on the Mir coast, Chiavari also has access to beaches. They are not too wide, but in high season many tourists spend their holidays here. The city also has a Marina Chiavari Marina adapted to receive yachts and tourist boats.
