Castiglione del Lago is a tourist and holiday village on Lake Trasimeno. Its surroundings are very picturesque and perfect for spending time actively. An additional advantage of the city is the picturesque old town and excellent restaurants.
The vicinity of Lake Trasimeno was already inhabited in Etruscan times. There are archaeological sites with the ancient settlements of Gioiella, Vaiano and Pozzuolo. In turn, after the Roman times, the ruins of a villa with remains of mosaics have been preserved. In the Middle Ages, Castiglione del Lago was under the rule of the popes and remained in the ecclesiastical state with breaks until the unification of Italy.
The historic center of the town has pretty houses, narrow streets and medieval defensive walls with three gates. There is also the Rocca del Leone castle and the 16th-century prince's palace with valuable frescoes inside.
The vicinity of the city is very attractive for tourists. They are included in the Trasimeno Lake Park. It includes both shores and islands, including l'Isola Polvese with oak and laurel forests. In the park, you can go hiking, canoeing, boating and cycling.
