Bruneck is a tourist town in the Dolomites, a ski and holiday center, and a center of active tourism. It is known for two museums run by one of the greatest climbers in history, Reinhold Messner.
The city combines historical traditions with modernity. In its center there is a picturesque Old Town, where you can feel the atmosphere of a former alpine resort. There are well-kept tenement houses with colorful facades, numerous cafes and restaurants, and an elongated market square with a column of the Mother of God. The architecture is much more similar to similar places in Austria than to Italian architecture.
The medieval castle of Bruneck is an important monument of the city. Since 2006, the Messner Mountain Museum has been operating there. It is one of the few centers founded by Reinhold Messner, conqueror of the crown of the Himalayas and Karakoram, one of the greatest climbers in history. The museum presents the life of the mountain population, both in Italy and in the mountains around the world.
One of the biggest attractions of Bruneck is the Kronplatz mountain, 2,275 meters above sea level. On its slopes, one of the largest ski resorts in the area is located. You can reach the summit, among others by the Plan de Corones cable car. In addition to restaurants and skiing facilities, you will also find the remarkable Messner Mountain Museum Corones. The building, partially hidden in the ground, was designed by Zaha Hadid. Exhibitions on the history of mountaineering are presented here.
