The museum was opened in 1998 and immediately became home to Ötzi - the world's oldest natural human mummy preserved in ice. The body is in an air-conditioned chamber at a temperature of -6 degrees Celsius and 98% humidity. The museum collection also includes the history and archeology of the southern Alps.
