Russian Monastery of Ascension

Local name: Russian Monastery of Ascension

The Russian Church with the Ascension Tower are located on the Mount of Olives, in the place from which, according to Orthodox tradition, Jesus was to ascend to heaven. Currently, an Orthodox monastery operates here. You can see the neo-Byzantine monastery church, the chapel of Saint John and the 64-meter tower-bell tower made of light stone.

The monastery was founded in the second half of the nineteenth century, during the expansion of the Orthodox Church in Jerusalem. The chapel of Saint John stood on the ruins of the Armenian church from the 6th century. According to tradition, the head of Saint John the Baptist was found in its basement. Fragments of Byzantine floor from the 6th century have survived in the church.

Next to the chapel there is a church built on a central plan. It has a simple decor, devoid of decorations. Behind her is a fence stone. According to tradition, this is the place where the Mother of God stood during the Ascension of Jesus. The most visible part of the complex is the neo-Romanesque tower bell tower ended with a hip roof.
