The Ascension Chapel is located on the Mount of Olives. Currently, it is in the hands of the Muslim community in Jerusalem. It is a small, octagonal building covered with a dome. Inside is a rock with imprinted footprint, which according to tradition was supposed to belong to Jesus.
This place was worshiped in the first centuries of Christianity. The first chapel was built in the 4th century. Her traces were discovered during archeological works. The building that can be seen today was built in the 12th century. Near it was a monastery whose monks took care of the holy place. According to the description of the Gospel and the Acts of the Apostles, it was here that Jesus ascended to heaven in the presence of his disciples. He also considers them holy Islamic tradition in which Jesus is one of the prophets.
The small, stone chapel is decorated with arches supported on columns, which probably come from an earlier building. Inside there is a Muslim mihrab. The rock on which Jesus was to stand was divided. The right footprint remained in Jerusalem, while the left foot was transferred to the Al-Aqsa Mosque. Muslims allow the celebration of one mass a year in the chapel on the day of the Ascension. The facility is also open to visitors and pilgrims.
