Temple Mount is a hill located in the Old City of Jerusalem, which was worshiped in Judaism, Christianity and Islam for thousands of years. It is one of the largest sacred areas in the world, where the Jerusalem Temple was in ancient times and now houses Islamic holy places, such as the Dome of the Rock and the Al-Aqsa Mosque.
Temple Mount, which until the 4th century was also known as Zion, rises 740 meters above sea level and towers over the Old City of Jerusalem. It is surrounded by a wall with fifteen gates. The current shape of the hill is the result of the actions of Herod the Great, who around 19 BC expanded the natural plateau of the mountain and filled the empty spaces.
The place has historical and religious value for all three major Abrahamic religions: Judaism, Christianity and Islam. Jews and Muslims are particularly important, and the competitive claims of these religious communities make it one of the most contested religious sites in the world.
