The Chain Dome also called the miniature of the Dome of the Rock is a small, openwork building standing on the Temple Mount. Established in the 7th century and served as a place of prayer for Muslims and a Christian chapel.
The origin of the dome and its name comes from the time of King Solomon. He was supposed to hang the chain at which the testimony was given in court proceedings. The witness held the chain in his hands. According to the parable, if he spoke falsely, lightning struck and the testimony was lost. In more modern times, the dome was built by Caliph Abd Al-Malik in 691. It was not a mosque, but a place where Muslims gathered. Over time, the crusaders transformed it into a chapel. It is currently part of the Dome of the Rock complex.
It is an octagonal, regular building, covered with a multi-pitched roof. Above it rises a blue dome supported by a hexagonal drum. The lower part of the building is an arcade with semicircular arches. The upper part and drum of the dome are covered with multi-colored mosaics. A stone mimbar is built into one of the arcades.
