Via Dolorosa

Local name: Via Dolorosa

Via Dolorosa, or the Way of the Cross, is a street within the Old City of Jerusalem considered to be the path that Jesus followed on his way to his crucifixion. The street leads from the madrassa Omar, where the first Way of the Cross station is located, to the Basilica of the Holy Sepulcher. Via Dolorosa is mostly located in the Muslim part of the city, but its end stations are located in the Christian quarter. The Way of the Cross is also the name of the celebrations that are celebrated here.

Via Dolorosa, also known as the "path of suffering" or "path of sadness", are ten stations depicting the passion of Jesus Christ. Up to the fifteenth century, there were fourteen stations, currently the other stations are located in the Holy Sepulcher Basilica. The Way of the Cross in Jerusalem is an important pilgrimage site from around the world. Its route was established in the eighteenth century, replacing previous versions.

Via Dolorosa was most likely designated against the Franciscans. It leads from the station symbolizing the condemnation of Christ, through the imposition of the cross, its falls, the loved ones met along the way, until the crucifixion and death. Every Friday, at 15 or 16 o'clock, a procession sets out from Jesus' courtyard in the footsteps of Madara.
