Zedekiah's Cave, also known as King Solomon's Quarries, is located in Jerusalem and is a popular tourist attraction. An area of 5 hectares can be found east of the Damascus Gate, in the old town. Only the mouth of the cave is a natural creation, the rest have been forged by slaves and laborers over several thousand years.
King Solomon's quarries are a proposition especially for lovers of exploration. The underground cave allows visitors to cool down on a hot day and explore the passage, which according to legend, the biblical King of Jerusalem Zedekiah fled to Jericho. Other accounts say that the quarry served Herod the Great in order to obtain raw material for building the temple. The cave is open to the public and its entrance is just below the walls of the Old Town.
From the entrance, the Zedekiah Cave stretches for about 200 meters. Inside there are many artificial ancient formations that were carved in stones. On the rocks you can find signs and inscriptions in different languages. Paths provide access to every corner of the quarry system, and the entire walk takes about 30 minutes.
