Chapel at the site of the Crucifixion of Christ
Local name: הקפלה באתר של הצליבה של ישו
The Orthodox Death Chapel on the Cross is located in the Basilica of the Holy Sepulcher in the Old City of Jerusalem. It can be found in the northern part of Golgotha, a rock on which, according to the Bible, Jesus was crucified. The chapel is decorated with olive lamps and plates that depict scenes of the Passion.
In the Death Chapel on the Cross, tourists can admire the marble altar and the hole under the altar, in which the cross of Jesus was plugged. Pilgrims adore this place, putting their hands in the rock hewn inlet. Between the altar and the wall, a cross was placed, which is to be a replica of the Jesus cross.
Under the cross are the parents of Christ, Maria and Józef, dressed in robes made of silver sheet, whose color is to correspond with the plate depicting scenes of the crucifixion. The very rock of Golgotha, on the top of which, according to the Gospel, the cross of Jesus was plugged, is visible through the glass sight-glass located on both sides of the altar.
