Chapel on the spot of the Tomb of Christ

Local name: Chapel on the spot of the Tomb of Christ

The chapel on the site of the Holy Sepulcher is located in the Basilica of the Holy Sepulcher in the Old City of Jerusalem. The Christian chapel rises above the place where, according to Scripture, Jesus' body was laid after his death. The monument is the last added architectural element that was built in the basilica.

The chapel, called aedicula, is located in the center of a massive rotunda. It was built in 1810, during the renovation of the entire basilica, which was damaged in a fire. Inside, there are two rooms, the first of which is the Angel's Chapel, in which a miniature altar was made, made of a part of stone, which sealed the grave. The second room is the Holy Tomb itself.

In 2017, the renovation of the Chapel of the Holy Sepulcher was completed, protecting the building against progressive destruction. During the renovation works, the marble slab of the grave was unveiled, under which there was another slab, and below it the proper rock, on which, according to beliefs, the body of Jesus Christ was laid after his crucifixion. The importance and mysticism of the place mean that Christians from all over the world make pilgrimages to the chapel.
