Kerry County is one of the most-visited regions by tourists in Ireland. They are attracted by coastal towns, the highest mountains on the island with the Carrantuohill peak, wild landscapes of jagged peninsulas and numerous lakes.
The region has a very well developed coastline with several peninsula with jagged shores overlooking the sea. The three largest and best known are Kerry, Dingle and Beara. They are characterized by mountainous interiors and a picturesque shoreline with lots of bays, capes and islets. Off the coast of Kerry are the rocky islands of Skellings, which are a refuge for waterfowl. Scenic roads lead around the peninsulas.
Due to its location on the western edge of Ireland, Kerry is a county where villages where the Gaelic language is used are still preserved. A special place in this respect is the Dingle Peninsula inhabited by traditional communities. Its attraction is also the early medieval Gallus Oratory.
The Killarney area is a very well-known part of the county and popular with tourists. Macgillycuddy's Reekns rise here, with the highest peak in the Carrantuohill country. Mountains covered with meadows and heaths with numerous rock fields tower over glacial lakes. It is a land where active, walking and cycling tourism reigns.
There are also interesting monuments in the county. These include the picturesque town of Killarney, the Muckross House in its suburbs with magnificent gardens, Ross Castle and the ruins of the medieval Ardfert Cathedral.
