Derrynane House

Local name: Teach Dhoire Fhionáin

The Derrynane House, which is in the Derrynane National Park, now houses a museum dedicated to Daniel O'Connell, an Irish politician. The museum's exhibition allows visitors to learn about both his political career and the history of his life. In addition to the house itself, the surrounding park is also open to visitors.

At the time Daniel O'Connell was born, Derrynane's home had been in the O'Connell family for several generations. O'Connell himself admitted that this place was of great importance to him. He spent his childhood here, and later spent the summer months here with his family.

The history of the house dates back to 1702, but only the later buildings have survived to our times. In 1967, the house was thoroughly renovated, during which the oldest part of the building was pulled down for safety reasons. In the same year, a museum was established here, officially opened by President De Valera.
