Valentia Island Heritage Centre

The Valentia Island Heritage Center is located in Knight's Town. It shows the history and culture of the island, as well as its geological past. The main part of the exhibition concerns the transatlantic telegraph that started on the island of Valentia. There are also monuments related to the struggle for Irish independence and fossils of prehistoric animals.

The center is located in the building of the 19th century school in King's Town. It is not only a museum, but also a cultural center where workshops, concerts, meetings with writers and historians and meetings of local associations are organized.

The museum's collections are very diverse. They form a narrative sequence that shows the past of the island of Valentia, from the traces of dinosaurs and the tetrapod, through the traces of the life of the first inhabitants of these areas, home furnishings from different periods of time, memorabilia of national uprisings to the transatlantic telegraph station. In the center, you can also see a reconstructed and fully equipped school room from the beginning of the 20th century.
