Muckross Abbey

The ruins of Muckross Abbey are located in Killarney National Park, near the famous tourist destination of Killarney. These are the stone remains of the church, courtyard and some residential buildings. They are surrounded by forests and meadows belonging to the Muckross estate. The main tourist trail leading through the Park is also nearby.

The monastery was founded in the middle of the 15th century. It was inhabited by the Franciscans. It was destroyed many times as a result of the Irish-British wars. In the nineteenth century, a parish operated here, covering the picturesque surroundings of Killarney. Many Irish poets like it. Their 18th and 19th century tombstones can be seen at the monastery cemetery. There are also the graves of the famous Irish families of O'Donoghue, O'Rathaille and O'Suilleabhain.

The monastery is now in ruins. The partially roofless, oblong stone church with a square tower is relatively well preserved. Around it, there are remnants of residential buildings and a courtyard with an extensive yew tree, which is a monument of nature.
