Blasket Centre

Dunquin Blasket Center is a museum and heritage center dedicated to the community that lived on the nearby Great Blasket Island until the mid-20th century. The center has a modern exhibition with interactive and audiovisual elements to help visitors learn about the history, culture and heritage of the Blasket community.

Great Blasket Island has been continuously inhabited since the 19th century, and the local community (around 100-150 people) made a living largely by fishing. Three notable Irish writers lived and worked here: Tomás Ó Criomhthain, Peig Sayers and Muiris Ó Súilleabháin. In 1953, the last 30 people living on the island were evacuated due to deteriorating conditions and supply difficulties.

Great Blasket Island covers an area of 4.3 km2 and is situated about 2 kilometers off the Irish coast. Despite the relatively short distance, the island has always been relatively difficult to access due to difficult weather conditions.
