Reutlingen is a city that is often called the Gate of the Swabian Alb, a forested mountain range that has been classified as UNESCO biosphere reserves since 2009. The historic center with buildings from the Middle Ages has been preserved there.

Ok. In 1030, a small fortress was built on the Achalm hill above today's town. Today, only the defensive tower, rebuilt in the 19th century, can be seen in its place. The center was granted city rights at the end of the 12th century and developed mainly as a shopping center. At the turn of the thirteenth and fourteenth centuries, the most important of the local monuments, the St. Mary's Church, one of the most significant Gothic buildings in Swabia, was erected.

Around the church is the Old Town with many preserved tenement houses, the 14th-century church of St. Nicholas and the market square. It is now the center of the city's social life with many restaurants and bars.

The Gönninger Lakes are an attraction around Reutingen. These are the areas of the former tuff mining, now turned into a recreation area with walking paths, picnic areas and a nature educational trail.
