Offenburg is a historic city in the Black Forest, surrounded by vineyards in the hills. It has been a thriving wine-growing center since the Middle Ages, and the historic center has many wineries and bars serving local wines.
The city has existed since the 12th century, and one of the military camps was located here in Roman times. Due to its location on the German-French border, Offenburg was destroyed several times as a result of hostilities over the centuries. From the oldest buildings in the city, only the Gothic parish church has survived to this day.
The center of Offenburg is built up with half-timbered and baroque tenement houses, mainly from the 17th and 18th centuries. A town residence from 1784, which now houses the Ritterhaus Museum documenting the history of the region, is distinguished among them.
Offenburg's attractions also include places for family relaxation. One of them is the Gifizsee Lake Farm established as a mini zoo where children can get to know domestic animals such as ponies, goats, sheep and various types of cattle. In the northern part of the lake there is also the Gifizsee Beach with a bathing area and recreational areas.
