Magdeburg is a historic city that boasts one of the first German Gothic cathedrals. In the Ottonian times it was the seat of the manor, and many important buildings from the Middle Ages have survived to this day.

The stronghold in the place where today's Magdeburg is located already existed in the ninth century. It was a significant trade center with Slavic tribes. He came to great importance as the center of the so-called Ottonian revival. A bishopric was created here and Otto I was buried in 973.

The most important monument of the city is the early Gothic cathedral in Magdeburg erected in the 13th century above the place where Otton I was buried. It is filled with valuable monuments of sacred art. The Ottonianum Cathedral Museum operates at the temple.

Near the cathedral, in the Old Market, stands the Magdeburg Rider, a replica of a thirteenth-century horse sculpture, considered the oldest statue of this type north of the Alps. The original is kept in the Museum of Cultural History, which is housed in a 13th-century Norbertine monastery.

Magdeburg is also full of other valuable monuments of medieval architecture and art. Among them are the Old Town Hall, the church of St. John, on the tower of which there is a viewing terrace, Gothic churches of St. Sebastian, Saint. Of Piotr and Augustianów.

In contrast to these historic buildings, the Green Citadel standing in the city center is designed by Friedensreich Hundertwasser. The unusual building with unusual shapes still causes a lot of controversy and critics accuse it of disturbing the architectural order of the city. Colorful Otto Richtera street is also a stepping stone from old monuments.

There are also interesting museums in Magdeburg. The most magnificent of them is the Millennium Tower, a wooden conical building 60 m high, surrounded by external stairs, in which civilization achievements from the ancient East to the 21st century are presented. Nevertheless, the Museum of the Technical Museum and the Museum of Art are interesting. Magdeburg Zoo and Gruson Greenhouses are also waiting for visitors.
