Liechtenstein is a historic town in the picturesque surroundings of the Swabian Alb. It is dominated by a neo-Gothic castle known as the Fairy-tale Castle of Württemberg.
In the Middle Ages, a small fortress stood on a rocky hill above today's town. It was destroyed already in the 14th century. On its ruins in the 19th century, the Urach family, to which this area belongs to this day, erected the neo-Gothic, romantic Lichtenstein Castle. His plans were made on the basis of the stories of the writer Wilhelm Hauff. Some of the castle rooms are open to the public. It houses a museum with an exhibition of weapons from around the world, and beautiful stained glass windows in the castle chapel.
Lying at the foot of the castle, in the valley between the heights of the Swabian Alb, the town has pretty buildings and a picturesque market square. It is a good starting point for the surrounding trails, and among its attractions is the Wilhelm Hauff Museum.
