Esslingen am Neckar is a small, extremely picturesque city with over 1,200 years of history. Its old town with houses that look like cut out of gingerbread, a medieval castle and the remains of fortifications is ideal for a walk of several hours. An additional advantage of this place is the tradition of producing sparkling wines, which can be tasted in numerous wineries.
Located on the German-French border, Esslingen has been an important trade and wine center since the Middle Ages. However, it wasn't until the nineteenth century that the city became truly famous. In 1826, Georg Christian Kessler began to produce the first German sparkling wine here. To this day, it is the most recognizable product from Esslingen, and the places associated with the production of noble drink can be known thanks to the Wine Route.
Vineyards are an inseparable element of the city's hilly surroundings. They also grow on the hill on which Esslingen Castle rises. From its walls there is a beautiful panorama of the Old Town. Part of it is the so-called Little Venice, a small district cut up by canals, above which picturesque tenement houses and numerous bridges and footbridges rise. The most famous is the built-in Innere Brucke bridge, which now houses cafes and bars. Little Venice can be visited during a boat trip.
In the Old Town there is no shortage of beautiful houses with decorated facades. Within it, almost 900 historic buildings were added. A valuable monument is the city church of St. Dionysius. There are also remains of fortifications with the Old City Gate. You can learn about the city's history at the City Museum, while the Nymphaea Zoo is a very popular contemporary attraction.
