Cottbus is the most important city in Lower Lusatia and the cultural center of the Sorbs, a Slavic group living in East Germany. Its most important monument is surrounded by the extensive landscape park Castle of Prince Pückler Branitz.
The city was founded in the Middle Ages and the urban layout of the city has survived to this day, with the market square and a grid of streets crossing at a right angle. The Old Market Square itself is surrounded by tenement houses with baroque facades, but Gothic buildings can be easily found in the surrounding streets. One of them is the parish church of St. Nicholas, and the most famous is the Spremberger Tower, from which you can admire the panorama of the area.
From the 18th century, Cottbus gradually changed into an industrial city. You can see here the villas of the villages that were once owned by the factory owners and the unique quarter of factory and residential buildings from the 19th and early 20th centuries. They are half-timbered and brick houses, and the most important object of this region is the old power plant.
Cottbus suffered quite a lot during World War II, but the defects of the old buildings were tried to be filled in line with the spirit of the past. At the same time, during the GDR, many sculptures and mosaics related to the daily activities of the population appeared in the city. One of them is the mosaic Agricultural market in Cottbus.
The city's most famous attraction is located in its suburbs called Branitz. This is the Fürst-Pückler Park, where the Prince Pückler Castle stands. this traveler, dreamer and visionary, fascinated by the creation of unusual landscape parks, created, among others, a 40-km-long UNESCO-listed site known today as the Muskauer Park. The prince designed his tomb in the park in Branitz. It is located in the Water Pyramid, and the palace itself now houses the Prince Pückler Museum.
