Spreewald Biosphere Reserve

Local name: Biosphärenreservat Spreewald

The biosphere reserve was established in 1990. It belongs to a network of over 700 similar areas operating under the supervision of UNESCO. It includes wet meadows, rivers and streams, forests and arable land. Within it, 23 nature reserves under strict protection have been designated.

There are over 18,000 species of plants and animals in the biosphere reserve, including several hundred listed in the Red Book of Endangered Species. Among them there are 830 species of butterflies, 113 species of mussels and snails, 18 species of amphibians and reptiles, 36 species of fish, 45 species of mammals and about 140 species of birds. You can meet here, among others otters, beavers, cranes, kingfishers and black and white storks.

Walking routes have been marked out in the reserve. There are also organized cruises on cruise ships. During your visit, visit the open-air museum Lehde, the Spreewaldmuseum in Lübbenau and the Municipal and Regional Museum Schloss Lübben.
