Mausoleum

Local name: Mausoleum

The mausoleum was built in the first half Of the 19th century at the request of King Frederick William III for his prematurely deceased wife Luisa. Inside the building are the marble sarcophagi of Queen Louise, King Frederick William III, Emperor Wilhelm I and his wife Augustine, as well as the heart of King Frederick William IV. The business card of the building is a monument decorating the sarcophagus of Queen Louise, whose author is Christian Daniel Rauch.

The mausoleum was designed by Heinrich Gentz and initially served as a private temple. Over the years, the tomb has been repeatedly expanded and rebuilt, changing its original purpose.

The sarcophagi located in the mausoleum are cenotaphs, or symbolic tombs for the dead. In fact, the coffins with the bodies are in the crypt under the main hall of the building.
