Bamberg is a historic city, which thanks to its favorable location avoided the destruction of World War II. The medieval Old Town with a Romanesque-Gothic cathedral inscribed on the UNESCO list has been preserved here.
The beginnings of the city date back to the 10th century and the time of Otto I. In the following century a bishopric was established and the famous cathedral school was founded. In the Middle Ages, Bamberg was one of the most important German cities of great economic and cultural significance.
The most impressive building of the city is the cathedral. Its construction was completed in the 13th century and is one of the seven medieval imperial cathedrals. There are imperial graves in the crypt. Pope Clement II was also buried here. By the wall of the cathedral there is a statue of the Bamberg rider considered to be one of the earliest horse statues erected after the end of the ancient period. The buildings next to the cathedral house the diocesan museum with wonderful art collections.
The Old Town of Bamberg has retained its layout from the Middle Ages. Its central building is the Old Town Hall standing on the island. Despite the Gothic shape, the building's decorations are primarily eighteenth-century. The walls are covered with illusionist paintings, and the Rococo Hall delights with splendor. The City Hall presents the Ludwika Collection, which is one of the largest European porcelain collections.
Located on the river bank, the oldest part of Bamberg with the Old Market Square abounds in beautiful, historic buildings. Among them are valuable churches, such as the Upper parish, the baroque church of St. Martin, Monastery of Michelsberg with the tomb of St. Otto, observation deck and monastery garden of St. Michael, church of St. James, Church of St. St. Stephen's and the Carmelite Monastery of Saint. Theodore. One of the tenements houses the unique Nativity Scene Museum in Bamberg strongly associated with the tradition of Christmas markets. On the outskirts of the Old Town stands the Rose Garden of the seventeenth century New Residence.
The city can be admired both during walks and on the Kropf ship cruise on the Main-Danube Canal. You can also rent a Bamberg-Bug boat.
