Céret is a charming town steeped in a Catalan atmosphere. Located at the foot of Pierenejów, in a beautiful landscape, it has a nice, historic architecture, preserved fragments of medieval fortifications and the famous Museum of Contemporary Art.
The town is located near the Spanish border and its culture has French, Spanish and Catalan elements. Influences from Catalonia are particularly strong in the form of music, dance, cuisine, and the language used by some of the inhabitants. In the Middle Ages, Céret was a local trading center, and due to its border location, it was surrounded by defensive walls. Their fragments with the city gate have survived to this day.
Within the former city walls, you can visit the pretty old town in Céret. There are stone houses, small, shaded squares, and in summer many restaurants and cafes open their gardens on the streets. The climate definitely resembles that known from Catalan cities, and hearing Spanish or Catalan in the streets is not unusual.
Céret's biggest attraction is the Museum of Contemporary Art. For such a small center, it has an extremely valuable collection of works by 20th-century artists. The collection includes, among others works by Picasso, Matisse, Chagall, as well as impressionists.
