Varde is a historic town close to the Wadden Sea National Park, entered on the UNESCO list. Its oldest monument is the Romanesque church, while a lot of nice buildings from the 18th and 19th centuries have been preserved in the center.
The city was founded at the beginning of the 13th century, but in the mid-12th century the church of St. James. It was rebuilt many times and today a late Gothic tower adjoins the Romanesque nave, and the interior features baroque furnishings.
In the city center, there are bourgeois and merchant houses from the 18th century. The local inhabitants were then traders in oxen and agricultural products. The city also had the right to store fish transported from ports into the interior of the country. All this contributed to the increase in the wealth of local merchants.
Varde's attractions include the local museums. In the city museum, you can see items related to the history of the center. The Artillery Museum in Varde is housed in former barracks and presents the history of artillery from the Middle Ages to the present day. The Frello Museum is dedicated to the life and work of Otto William Frello, who spent a large part of his life in Varde.
