Sorø is a small town picturesquely situated on an isthmus between two lakes. There is a monumental Gothic monastery church and the seat of the oldest Danish school, the Academy in Sorø.

The city was founded in the 12th century and its initial history is connected with the Benedictine monastery, and then the Cistercian monastery, founded by one of the most important Danish families at that time, Hvide. The Romanesque-Gothic brick monastery church, which is today the only remnant of the abbey and the most important Sorø attraction, is the place where representatives of the Hvide family and three Danish kings, Christopher II, Waldemar IV and Olaf II, are buried.

Although the center of Sorø was damaged several times by fires, some buildings from the 15th to 18th centuries have been preserved here. The half-timbered house houses the Sorø Museum, and the Sorø Art Museum has a large collection of Danish art, mainly from the 18th century. From its inception, Sorø was also a thriving scientific and cultural center. In 1140, Bishop Absalom founded a school at the monastery which was transformed into the Academy of Sorø in the 17th century by King Christian IV. Its present building dates back to the 19th century. In its vicinity, you can also visit the Hauchs Physical Office.

The location by two lakes gives Sorø good conditions for active tourism. Here you can sail, canoe, go for walks on the hiking trails and paths, and ride bicycles. The place of rest is Frederikskilde Beach as well as the Natura Parnas resort, which provides access to beaches, a bathing beach, a marina by the lake, a rope park and many other attractions related to active leisure.
