Ringkøbing is a historic town and port with medieval roots. In its vicinity there are sandy beaches where you can see the remains of German fortifications from the Second World War.
The city was founded in the 13th century and until the 17th century it was a natural port. When the mouth of the bay was closed by sand deposited with sea waters, the waterway was closed. It was reopened only in the 20th century by digging the canal. As a result, Ringkøbing has a marina that can be reached by fishing vessels, yachts and sailing boats.
A lot of buildings from the 15th to 19th centuries have been preserved in the city center. One of the oldest monuments is the Gothic church of Ringkøbing with a massive brick tower. The history of the city is shown by the Ringkøbing Museum, which in addition to the main building, which displays historical collections and a collection of paintings, also has a small open-air museum. There you can see huts and fishing boats, farmers' houses and their equipment.
The beaches around Ringkøbing are sandy and popular during summer. In many places there are remains of bunkers on the west coast, built by the Germans during World War II. The area around the bay is a habitat for waterfowl and marsh birds, and many activities are offered at the Ringkøbing Amusement Park.
